9.4.8 is a GS (General Sustainability) version. ie. it's stable, and updates are only to fix bugs.
10.1 (And 10.0) are GA versions (General Availability). They have updates to add features and fix bugs. 

Because of the 'Add Features' feature of GA versions you'll find new bugs introduced at times. So it's not generally recommended to run GA versions in production unless you actually need to. (i.e. there might be some gee wiz feature you need etc).
