You shouldn't get hung up on not using tools! We often use Visio or a simple sequence-chart tool, with a projector or NetMeeting, for collaborative modeling. Hand-drawn diagrams create inertia - once you've got a complex diagram, the notion of redrawing it to insert a change becomes unappealing. More complicated tools also have their charms - if you've got bunch of diagrams showing different views of the same components and their interactions, the ability to change a name in one place and have the change propagate through the other diagrams is very attractive, as is the ability to use an interface in an interaction diagram and have the tool notice that it isn't a defined method of the component and let you add it automatically. Good tools can increase your low-level agility. You don't have to over-model just because you're using capable tools. scott Thanks, Scott. Excellent points. The first really good pro-tools posting I've seen. I was getting the feeling that the list was somewhat anti-tool with the white board and disposable models. In this case however it's somewhat amusing. The company culture is one that will not allow non-IS personnel to have tools like that - not even Visio. That was why I pushed into a white board approach. But it does bring up one aspect: how do you do successful collaboration all gathered around a single monitor? Say you have 15 people of different stripes on the team. Is there a collaboration/design tool that can communicate on the many levels of those needing to share information?
