our team discussed this recently and we decided on a mix with the preference of our local language. Priority was to make code easily readable:
- in general - use local language if not sure
- business-oriented - local language - it war VERY hard to translate business language to English. Even harder was reading that code - in specification document you find some term and look around for that term in application, but you can't find it - very frustrating. Basically every developer had to translate again in his head in order to find things in code.
- technical terms, pattern names etc. - use English (e.g. XyzService not our local XyzServis etc.). Here we didn't want to translate conventional English terms to our language.


On the other hand once we've leased developers to the foreign customer and he had code in his local language. Guess how painful that was :-) Meanings of words were not even guessable for our guys, so they had to learn foreign lang. AND the application. Ouch. I think our client didn't have even remote idea they would ever use foreign developers. You never know and you can't cover all bases for all possible futures...
