Well, not what I meant - it seems that you can reverse from IL into a specific language. And then refactor. But now that you mention it, a lot of refactoring would make sense at the IL level. I mean we all understand "extract method" - and it would be the same at the IL level, for any of C#, VB.NET, managed C++ etc. John D. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Alfredo Sent: 02 December 2011 19:26 To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [refactoring] Refactoring and clone consolidation As far as I understand, refactoring tools do need to "understand" the semantics of the source language, despite the compilation's target language (JVM bytecodes, MSIL, x86 machine language, etc). Therefore, refactoring at the IL level would require a massive redesign effort, I guess. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: [refactoring] Refactoring and clone consolidation Date: Fri, 2 Dec 2011 07:27:04 +0000 From: Donaldson, John <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Would there be any mileage in adopting the c++ into managed code, converting into IL, refactoring as, say c# and then back? It sounds horrendous as a general proposition, but perhaps for some focused need it might work. You should explicitly state that on your product pages. I get tired of looking at the latest ballyhooed advances in refactoring only to find out that it doesn't support the language that needs refactoring tools the most. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 version available for download <http://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/the-direct3d-graphics-pipeline/> Legalize Adulthood! <http://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com> ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
