RE: Agile Mindset Talk

What I would want to do would depend on management’s perspective. My experience is that unless management is on board with changes at the management level – changing release cycles, how planning is done, what incentives are present in the system, etc. – then teams are going to be constrained on what they can achieve, and I’m not doing them any favors inspiring them to places they can’t go.

If you have management on board, then I would be very tempted to look for something outside of software in the lean manufacturing movement and see if you can spark some thought there. They get things like zero defects more than we do in the software world.

Toyota gets a lot of press in this area, but I think Honda has a far more interesting organizational culture.

Hi All,

I have an hour Thursday morning to deliver a parting message to my client’s team. What I want to leave them with is a sense of what’s possible. I want to inspire them with what’s possible. The title of the one hour session in the auditorium is the Agile Mindset. While attendance is optional it looks like 80 people may come.

I thought to show them the Jeff Sutherland Ted Talk because he does a very good job of bringing home the point of what is possible with teams. I would facilitate a discussion from that for another 15 minutes.

I’m looking for ideas for where I might go from there. What to leave them with. How to leave them inspired.


  *   About a third have seen the RSA Animate Video of Daniel Pink’s Drive. I may show that again.
  *   Most have seen the Spotify video (part 1) so there is no point in showing that

I would either like to show another great inspiring video about self-managing teams or agile or some such or

I’d like to do some group pair share exercise or

I could show the S**t bad ScrumMasters say video and call it a day. (I’m leaning toward this).

But I would like to hear from you. What might I do or show that will leave them inspirited with what is possible?
