I=E2=80=99m often wrong, but I don=E2=80=99t think any of the authors of th=
e Agile Manifesto would advocate dividing teams by functional specializatio=
n.  I=E2=80=99ve seen breakthroughs caused by elimination of artificial bou=
ndaries between functional groups =E2=80=94 creating cross-functional teams=
 =E2=80=94 so I=E2=80=99m surprised to read that this would be considered a=
 pipe dream.  By that, are you saying it=E2=80=99s not beneficial, or not r=
ealistic?  As I see it, the alternative is handoffs, which do violate an ex=
plicitly stated principle (face to face communication).

I agree.  But how did you get from =E2=80=9Ccreating cross-functional teams=
=E2=80=9D to =E2=80=9Cpeople are fungible resources=E2=80=9D?
