RE: [TFUI] RE: TDDing Excel

Hi, thanks for helping me get to the bottom of using fit tests. Here are my
current thoughts:

Firstly in response to Phlip:

1)The goal is make tests as easy as possible to write.

2)If you must mail me an excel spreadsheet, and I change it and mail it
back, and I must
await the test results, then we impair feedback.

 

[Phran] I agree that would be bad but the Excel spreadsheet can exist on a
shared server. Now if you had mentioned version control that would be
different because wikis usually keep old versions but then how do you keep
wiki versions in step with the code - or perhaps more important do you want
to.

 

3) So if we dig into VBA and build a system to make these excel spreadsheets
reach out to a
test server as you change them, then we have reinvented the
infrastructure that the web provides."

 

[Phran] But people like working with what they are familiar with. Thus using
Excel is a smaller step to agility then getting wikis running if you are
working in an organisation where change is difficult.

 

And in Response to Cory:

1) In addition to what Philip said, it also allows communication so that 
customers can see the status of what is going on whenever they like. ... 
And, because you can kick of the tests from inside the Wiki, they can 
view this without any interaction from developers.

 

[Phran] These could be done with Excel

 

Summary of my CURRENT thoughts (I always reserve the right to change my
mind):

Advantage is that it might be to get going easier than doing it in excel if
you have a wiki as there are lots of people working hard to make it happen.

Disadvantage it might be harder in an organisation where setting up wikis is
harder.

Disadvantage people will have to learn how use the wiki.

 

What are your thoughts on version control?
