Hello all, BOSC will again be virtual this year, but back with the larger ISMB conference again. See below. Would anyone like to give our traditional Biopython Project Update talk (as a pre-recorded video)? We would all try to help with the abstract and slides, but you'll need to have video conferencing setup in order to attend the meeting virtually. See this repository for past abstracts and many of the talks: https://github.com/biopython/talks Of course, I would also urge all of you to consider submitting an abstract on your own work too. The talks at the conference will again be followed by a multi-day collaborative event - the BOSC CoFest, where we might work on Biopython bug triage, documentation, etc. This could be very productive if some of our core team can set those days aside from their normal work as part of a virtual conference trip. I appreciate it is still a long way off, so for many of us it is too early to make any such commitment. Note abstract submitters can request a registration fee waiver (eg PostDoc with no conference budget). Peter -- (Full disclosure: I am on the BOSC 2021 organising committee, and the current OBF president. I would of course not be reviewing any abstract where I have a conflict of interest) ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: BOSC, the Bioinformatics Open Source Conference <[email protected]> Date: Wed, Mar 24, 2021 at 2:02 PM Subject: [bosc-announce] News about BOSC 2021 To: <[email protected]> BOSC will be held on July 29-30, as part of ISMB/ECCB 2021 Online. Join us! Key Dates May 6, 2021: Deadline for submitting one-page talk/poster abstracts May 27: Talk/poster acceptance notifications June 3: Late poster (and Late-Breaking Lightning Talk) submission deadline June 10: Late poster / LBLT acceptance notifications July 29-30: BOSC 2021 Online (part of ISMB/ECCB 2021 Online) July 31-Aug 1: CollaborationFest (CoFest) About BOSC Since 2000, the yearly Bioinformatics Open Source Conference (BOSC) has provided a forum for developers and users to interact and share research results and ideas in open source bioinformatics and open science. BOSC’s broad spectrum of topics includes practical techniques for solving bioinformatics problems; software development practices; standards and ontologies; approaches that promote open science and sharing of data, results and software; and ways to grow open source communities while promoting diversity within them. BOSC has been part of ISMB since the very first BOSC in 2020. We last partnered with ISMB at ISMB/ECCB 2019, held in Basel, Switzerland. In 2018 and 2020, we held joint conferences with the Galaxy Community. For 2021, we’re back with ISMB/ECCB! Timing BOSC 2021 will be the last two days of ISMB/ECCB: July 29-30. Our usual free collaborative work event, CoFest, will be held July 31 - August 1. BOSC will include keynote talks, longer and shorter (lightning) talks from submitted abstracts, posters, Birds of a Feather, and more! The complete ISMB/ECCB schedule is available here. The core hours for talks will be 11:00-15:30 UTC, with poster sessions and ISMB keynotes from 15:30-17:30 UTC. The core hours correspond to: 13:00-17:30 CEST (Europe) 12:00-16:30 BST (UK/Ireland) 7:00-11:30am EDT (East coast of North America) 4:00-8:30am PDT (West coast of North America) 9:00pm-1:30am AEST (West coast of Australia) Abstract submission We encourage you to submit abstracts on any topic relevant to open source bioinformatics or open science. After review, some abstracts will be selected for lightning talks, longer talks, or posters. All accepted talks will need to be video-recorded and submitted several weeks before the conference. Please note: the deadline for Abstract Submission is May 6th! Abstract will be submitted using ISMB’s EasyChair. Note that ISMB/ECCB requires a short (200-word) text-only abstract for all submissions (talk or poster), plus a “long abstract” (PDF, 2 pages max) if you want to be considered for a talk. Abstracts that are not chosen for talks will automatically be considered for posters. A second, later round of submissions will end on June 3. Abstracts submitted in the late round will be considered for posters and a limited number of “late-breaking lightning talk” slots; these late round abstracts are not eligible for longer talks. BOSC session topics include (but are not limited to): Open Science and Reproducible Research Open Biomedical Data Citizen/Participatory Science Standards and Interoperability Data Science Workflows Open Approaches to Translational Bioinformatics Open Science for Global Health Developer Tools and Libraries Inclusion, Outreach and Training Bioinformatics Open Source Project Reports (about new or existing projects) Learn more about BOSC at: https://www.open-bio.org/events/bosc/ Join our BOSC announcements mailing list: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bosc-announce Get in touch with us using Slack: https://join.slack.com/t/obf-bosc/shared_invite/zt-n5ur1gsj-z2C~69_4lYTFPg5tbWA8Ew Find us on Twitter at @OBF_BOSC and use #BOSC2021 for this year’s conference.
