A correction to my previous message: The intel compiler ( ifort ) I am using does recognize the -arch flag . It doesn't accept the -arch i686 keyword, only -arch 386 , but maybe because I"m using an older version (This is Python 2.6 on an OS 10.5 machine I am testing that on). gfortran doesn't recognize -arch at all . Where does distutils get the information for the c compiler flags? As far as I can tell, the -arch flag is being generated in the c compiler configuration, not in the f compiler configuration, but I can't see where that is happening.
