Why not just drop the first sentence, which makes it sound like Python is
something new?

Or: 
   Python continues to be widely used for connecting software components,
   spanning platforms, languages, and application domains in fields as
   different (far-ranging?) as web development, GUI applications, 
   and scientific programming.

I don't know if the program has been set yet, so I don't know what else you
can put into the second sentence. Note that WxPython has nothing to do with
Zope, and this makes it sound as if it does; perhaps just say Zope/Plone and
drop the whole 'including' clause.
