Phoenix is clearly the project code name. If you look at other examples, the code names
are usually abandoned when the project is finished (e.g. OS name, database engine name,
processor name). The problem with the names like this is they are expressive 
(in the "passion" sense); Phoenix means "rising from the ash", etc.
However, wxPython does express the true nature of the product. Few years later,
the "Phoenix" will not express the same. (The same opinion as David Hughes below. ;)

For the googling argument about wxPython, this is general for any long-term product.
The new wxPython should simply be given the new version number.
Python 3.6 is also different from Python 2.7, and it is still named Python.

In other words, wxPython is a good "trademark". It is more descriptive than wxPy.
Also, there will be people who will ask: "Should I use wxPython or wxPy?"
