validating data

Is there a standard way to validate the data collected by an EEG? Is there
some signature one can look for in the data that confirms that what's been
recorded is actually brain activity and not just muscle activity?

I'm looking at some standard data-sets available online and I'm thinking of
comparing my data with these. But before I did that I thought it made sense
to ask around if there's a standard known way to do validation.

Thanks
