Hi Paul It doesn't really make sense to have your own blank PCBs made when you can order them from Olimex. For the simple reason that a PCB manufacturer needs to tool up for a PCB, meaning they will need to develop all sorts of masks etc. and for that you need to pay the so called tooling costs, also refered to as the origination costs. These are once-off and are the reason that if you order many PCBs, or you re-order PCBs, the costs plummet. If you only want a 2-channel (and don't plan to upgrade to more channels at a later stage) I would suggest you rather go for the SMT-EEG. But I am not sure if Olimex sells the unpopulated PCBs only. From a cost point of view, I don't think you can build the SMT-EEG or the 2-channel modEEG cheaper than what the build and tested SMT unit from Olimex cost. Also remember the following points: 1. Many DIY projects fail because the builder does not follow through and builds his project into a decent enclosure. Many a HiFi amp was scrapped because it ended up in a cardboard shoebox. I don't like the fact that the SMT-EEG has it's input sockets distributed around the circumference of the box, but at least it is a complete, plug-and-play device. 2. If you are inexperienced, you could make some crucial mistakes when mounting the modEEG boards into a box. I am referring to isolation distances between PCBs and distances between PCBs and the use of any metal enclosures and/or screening. To be on the save side, it's best to only use plastic boxes. A mistake here will still have your EEG amp working, but it is potentially unsave to use, due to possible compromised/degraded electrical isolation. I can't comment on version numbers etc. I haven't looked at the available files and supporting documentation for years.
