A group I was part of in college made some projects with SSVEP using commercial headsets - you can get very good signal with it, and it's not difficult to induce. We got the best results using P7, O1, O2, and P8 electrodes. We used emotiv headsets, and since there is an open source library for accessing its signals (emokit), we were able to splice our code into an ebook reader. We weren't experts in the field and had trouble with peak detection, but we got it working reasonably reliably with a 5-second response time. A bit long, but at least it worked. Also, fun fact - we didn't look too far into this, but some initial testing showed that you can also probably generate the signal using binaural audio.
