Hi David, I would seriously consider to hold on a little longer and go with the Ganglion Board Kit from OpenBCI (4 channels!) when it's out. You'll fit right in with your background in electronics and programming! Free software and better community support (this list has become very silent). The modeeg is a very good device though, don't get me wrong. I believe I've seen people using it with Matlab and it is also compatible with a few commercial software packages. If you do go with modeeg, indeed get the SMT version from Olimex. It's a much more ready to use package. If you go with the older boards you would theoretically have the option to stack some more analog boards which provides you with more electrode inputs. But I've seldom seen anybody really building such an expanded device. With the older boards you still have to fit it in an enclosure and do the hookup wiring yourself. Plus you're on your own with making the electrodes or I think you could maybe use the passive smt version electrodes from Olimex. Watch out with using the device for actual neurofeedback. Probably better to have a QEEG done by a professional beforehand so you know which brainwaves you actually need to train at which position on the scalp according to the 10-20 system. Just my two cents on the subject.
