This is a new one to me.

My first guess is that the HDF5 packages were screwed up---that HDF5 was 
updated in a way that broke binary compatibility but the library version 
was not changed.

If this is the case, then you might try recompiling MPB from source to see 
if that fixes the problem.

It would also be helpful if you could be more explicit about what exactly 
you mean by "monkeying around a bit with the libraries".
