I have to admit that I don't remember all I did. I tried to run Meep 0.9
over a month ago, then got caught up in other work and have only just
returned to the numerical side of things (in fact, I don't think I booted my
linux at all during that time). I do remember installing a new version of
Libctl for Meep.
I've also installed newer kernel images, but I can't imagine that breaking
anything.
I realize this isn't exactly the level of detail I'll need to give to
properly figure out the cause of my troubles, but it's all I've got; sorry
about that.

Also, it might be worth noting that mpb does in fact start creating
epsilon.h5 (and it isn't empty) when I run it, right when it exits with
aforementioned error. I'll try sending the error to the libHDF5 people as
well, maybe they can tell me what to look for.

As for recompiling MPB from source, I tried that as well. I removed the
packaged MPB beforehand. I can compile it just fine, but it gives me the
exact same error when I run a .ctl file.
I'll probably just make a clean Linux install and try again (since right now
Meep and MPB are the only programs I use it for) but if I manage to find the
cause of the problem before then I'll be sure to post it here in case anyone
else runs into this.

Regards,
Roel

PS: Thanks for MPB and Meep, by the way; the power, functionality and
Guile/Scheme interface give just the right combination of usability and
transparent operation for a non-programmer like me.
