RE: configure failure

For the PKG_CONFIG_PATH problem try to set it to the location of the
pkgconfig directory inside your gtkextra installation:

Export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=3D/usr/local/lib/libgtkextra****/pkgconfig:(rest =
of
path)

This helped me on a system where pkg-config was not properly set up.

I am struggling with numerical python myself but cannot help any
further.
