After searching google sometime I found some similar problems with
gcc3.x. It seems to be a bug in gcc. I think you added "/usr/local/lib"
to /etc/ld.so.conf so in fact it should work. The problem why
./configure fails is the warning cc1 puts out. The directory
"/usr/local/include" (that is the directory where gtkextra.h is
installed) is specified as a system search directory for the linker
(which is /usr/bin/ld by default). The linker is a programm that brings
together all the modules of a program (I mean the different souce *.c
files) to the end-program. The search directories are specified at the
install time of gcc (so redhat has done that for you). Now the
configure-script includes this directory once more when compiling the
test program to find out if gtkextra is installed. But gcc3.x ends with
exit status 1 (error) with the warning you sent from the config.log file
(this doesn't happen with gcc2.95.x). This is a bug that is not
concerning sg. I'm sorry but I can't really help you in this case (in
fact I'm not really a developer but only a user that slowly gets
involved in c-problems). But I have maby one idea but I don't know if it
really helps you: Try to install gtkextra in prefix /usr by specifying
the argument "--prefix=/usr" to the configure-script of gtkextra. If
gtkextra is installed in /usr the problem maybe disapears but you can
only try. Another suggestion is to try to get involved in gcc-options
(maybe you get get rid of tis system directory(?!), but I also do not
know really, as I don't know where the system-search-directories are
saved at run-time). But I encourage you to try (maybe you can also write
to redhat and they can help you with that problem).

Best regards and good luck Jan Kohnert
