I agree, it should work adding  /usr/local/lib (or the path to
libgtkextra) to your ld.so.conf file. If it doesn't simply try setting the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable before compiling:
bash$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
bash$ ./configure

BTW, it seems that your unorthodox way of asking for help worked pretty
well ;-). I hope that other users contribute answering to simple
questions like yours more often.
