newbie - scigraphica segmentation fault at startup

Experts - please help - I am not sure if this is a bug - anyways, here is 
the problem.

I managed to compile scigraphica 0.8.0 on Redhat Linux 9.0 after
first installing gtk+extra and Numeric Python. 

However, when I run scigraphica, I see the welcome screen and then the
main screen which flashes "loading python modules" at the bottom - but
immediately after this I get segmentation fault !!!

I compiled with the configure flag --prefix=/usr

Here is what I get when I say scigraphica --version :
