It seems like the daemon must be run for each display (computer) connected and it only wants to run itself once. Is there another place that this issue is being investigated that you know of?

No, I honestly haven't investigated it too far myself. It is related
to differences in how X11, Gnome and KDE all deal with screen resolution
information (dpi). I googled around after we determined that it wasn't
a gtkextra problem, found the gnome-settings-daemon workaround, and quit
investigating. I am proceeding under blind hope that, with no more work
on my part, a fix will appear out there, somewhere... 8^)=

There is a bug filed with the Gnome project about this:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104341

As you can see, it has been an issue for a long time. Interesting
coincidence: just a few hours ago the Mandrake Cooker team posted a new
comment to the bug report, asking for the Gnome team to get back on top
of this one. That's not surprising, as Mandrake ships with KDE as the
default desktop if you don't choose anything else. I use Mandrake as
the starting point for my boxes, so I have seen this problem since the
10.0 betas. Other distros that use Gnome or something else as their
default desktop may not appear to be impacted as much, but this is a
universal issue that needs to be addressed.

	Hope that helps...
