Hey Adrian,

Yes, you are correct about how I've pasted the gtkextra1 code using
preprocessor code. I have concentrated my efforts on the gtkplot widgets
since right now they are the ones that I need access to. I have not checked
any of the other gtkextra widgets but I can do that tomorrow when I'm back
at work. One thing I don't understand is why the Gtk widgets don't seem to
be affected. I have compiled code linking to gtk 2.6.x and all widgets
display fine. I have linked to gtk for a while but I have never worked with
the actual code so I'm unfamiliar with how the widget design works but I'm
learning quite a bit from gtkextra.

My first steps tomorrow will be to confirm that the changes I did actually
work. I tried them out but it seemed too good to be true :), so I'm going to
be a little more thorough. If this effort works I would like to submit this
to you guys for evaluation and to see what you think (I welcome all
ideas/comments/etc). I need to get my project up and running but I am
intrigued by the issue. After that I think we can try to organize exactly
what the steps should be to backtrace this problem. Like I said above, I'm
not familiar with Pango but with some help I think I might be able to
dedicate time to this.

Al,
when you have noticed the tiny font issue, has it been with gtkextra widgets
or other widgets and gtk based applications also?

-Marco

Hi Al, Marco, everybody,

 I guess you've done something like

#ifdef WITH_PANGO
 ... copy and paste code from gtkextra-1
#else
 ... gtkextra-2 code with pango
#endif

Tell me something, though: do gtk widgets with labels in them (say,
buttons) appear with tiny fonts, or everything is fine with them and the
problem is only in gtkplot. We have to figure out the roots of the
problem and find a definitive solution. If you have some spare time in
your hands, do you think you can try to solve this puzzle?

Thanks!!!

the font interface, I think moving forward and using Pango is a great idea,
unfortunately the tiny font bug isn't in my domain. What I have done so far
is replaced a (surprisingly) few functions and definitions that allowed me
to implement the string display routines from gtkextra1 based on the GdkFont
primitives. I am using preprocessor code to tell gtkextra to build using the
non-pango routines. Although it is not clean right now I think it can be
reorganized in a much more professional way once I've tested all the
examples. I'm also trying to test it on other computers to confirm that it's
not just my imagination :).

made it (so far) quite simple to implement the older routines. So while code
using this mod will not be 100% gtk2 compliant it will get by without the
gnome-settings being run. I'll update you as soon as I have any more
progress (good or bad).
