Got it. What you are mentioning is pretty much what I've been changing. I do
agree that the issue should be fixed though. The solution that Al mentioned
seems to have placed the problem in Pango or gnome but I'm not familiar with
Pango development. I'll report my status to the list tomorrow, I think it
should work.

Actually, this should be easy (my first version of gtkextra-2 didin't
have any pango code in it). All you have to do is replacing the
drawstring code in gtkplotgdk.c, and gtk_plot_text_get_size in
gtkplot.c. That should make it.
Anyway, I'm a little stubborn :-), and I would like to see a solution to
the pango issue.
