The authors terms list has a different function than the journal list.
The journal list is for replacing the appropriate abbreviation for the
journal selected via the style interface while, as far as I can tell,
the author terms list is really to help with autofill, if you are
manually entering the authors (and at least those of us that use pubmed
or other databases, don't do that very often any more!). So what
exactly are you trying to use it for? Output variations for authors
(full name, initials, with periods or not) are all achieved thru the
output style options.

How do you enter variants for author names using the author terms list?
Is this the best way to handle multiple versions of the same author
name?
The Journals terms list seems more intuitive because you can enter
variants in different cells. For the authors terms list, however, you
only have one big text box with no further instructions on whether all
variants should be entered in the same place and how they should be
separated (e.g., using commas, semi-colons?). Information for using the
authors terms list is vague in the help manual.
