Subnet masks using VPN pack 3

I have 2 questions re subnet masks in smoothwall 1.4 fixes 4 with VPN 
pack 3.
1: Do you have to use the /24 notation, or is 255.255.255.0 still 
acceptable (and if so, do you have to use the same notation everywhere)?
2: Assuming I can still use the older notation, will 
192.168.0.0/255.255.240.240 work as a mask?  With my VPN setup I want to 
allow access to all machines in the range 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.15.15, 
but I'm not sure if I can do that or if I would have to use 
192.168.0.0/20 to allow access to 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.15.255.
Hopefully I haven't made this too confusing.
