Just a question, but with SP2, do you have the Popup stopper activated?  If
so, this may cause the problem that you are describing.

  I also found that I needed the http://smoothwall:81<http://smoothwall:81/>
instead of
  smoothwall:81 for IE, but no other browser. (I routinely use Mozilla)

  FYI:- the DNS setup I altered was:- (properties)My network
  places(properties)=>(properties)local area connection=>(general
  tab)Internet protocol(TCPIP)(properties)=>(advanced)=>(DNS tab)=>append
  these DNS suffixes (in order)=>(add)"."

  After this, dns requests for bare host names worked OK.

  This is not an issue for other machines on my net running Linux or Win
98SE.

  Hope this helps until someone can point out the real solution.
