"Unable to connect ...: Address family not supported by protocol" ?

try leaving out the colon:   /server localhost 6667
or, if your irc client defaults to port 6667:   /server localhost

Your IRC client is probably trying to connect using IPv6. Try using:
/server -4 localhost:6667
or:
/server 127.0.0.1:6667
