Ok, I solved it. I thought I'd try a different IRC client, 
and that was enough! :-(

In case this mailing list is eventually put on the web or
someone is compiling a FAQ, here is the relevent info; it's
BitchX version 1.0-0c19-3. The '3' is probably the Debian
package id.

What I tried instead was 'sirc' version, and there was no
problem.
