Many years ago I remember a discussion about this on the ipcop user mail list. If I remember right, you need a PCIx NIC where most of the hard work is done in the card. The bottleneck can be in the bus or in the driver, both of which are effectively single thread. With enough memory it’s unlikely to be in the CPU or processing. The discussion related to Gbit NICs for orange & green, but the same considerations would apply to red.
