I had to edit /var/ipcop/addons/wlanap/hostapd.conf to get 'n mode' working:

Set wme_enabled= to 1

and set ht_capab= to:

ht_capab=[HT40+][TX-STBC][RX-STBC1][DSSS_CCK-40][SHORT-GI-40]


This is for n-mode based on Channel 1 where I didn't have a conflicting WiFi 
if you are using the middle or top end of the band you probably need to set 
[HT40-] instead of [HT40+]. I suspect different cards may need different 
options (see the details in the config file).
