Snort is a ram killer and is multiplied by the number of monitored 
interfaces. As is, IPCop will not support more than 4GB of ram. A 
Pentium 3 could easily handle what you are seeking here if you are 
looking to use old throwaway hardware.

Since I used to create an adaptation for Cobalts called Raqcop (I cannot 
seem to contact the domain owner any more much less get it renewed), my 
interest expanded to other more modern hardware. My other project is set 
up with the kernel compiled to support PAE up to 64GB of ram. I have it 
running on a Quad Core i5 with 16GB of ram and it sees it all and has it 
available. Of course if a 64 bit version of IPCop existed this would be 
unnecessary. This same system while overkill, actually just sips power. 
Also, the boot loader is configured to output to the serial console. I 
prefer that edge appliances run headless. something like this might be

to rock, http://www.jetwaycomputer.com/NF592.html and try to find a use 
for eight nics.
