Independently from the possibilities I have shown here, I'ld like to add 
that very rarely an application system attempts to keep forward AND 
backward compatibility of their data-formats. In most cases I know of a 
datafile of version Y is not readable in a program of version X (where Y 
 > X). This seems reasonable, and most of the problems we discuss would 
fall away under such behaviour. One real problem is that seemingly PWS 
has not been designed to reflect format/program versions. It could, 
however, be pondered to at least introduce a value, e.g. under "options" 
or some other global place, that shows the program version (or format 
version) that has been latest used to write the file. Thus applications 
could attempt at a decission of either rejecting operation or reacting 
to version differences.
