It was a problem which I did not expect....

When I was logging in as root I got the mentioned error, hence I logged
in as another user (with root privilege); I found out that this because
root passwd has expired. Removed the expiry option, now no problem..

Thanks all for your help.

Try some debugging -- I'm used to ssh.com/f-secure SSH but I'm sure the
following could be adapted:

First run the client ssh in debugging mode (-d X where X is a number
1-9).

If that doesn't give anything useful, then run an SSH daemon in
debugging mode on a slightly different port. For the SSH I've used this
is just a -p XX command line switch for the port and a -d X for
debugging. Next connect to this special daemon and see what happens
(you'll have to accept a new host key because of the port change).

Generally the output of the server in debug mode will give me a pretty
good idea of why a connection is being dropped.

Best of luck,
