Try some debugging -- I'm used to ssh.com/f-secure SSH but I'm sure the following could be adapted: First run the client ssh in debugging mode (-d X where X is a number 1-9). If that doesn't give anything useful, then run an SSH daemon in debugging mode on a slightly different port. For the SSH I've used this is just a -p XX command line switch for the port and a -d X for debugging. Next connect to this special daemon and see what happens (you'll have to accept a new host key because of the port change). Generally the output of the server in debug mode will give me a pretty good idea of why a connection is being dropped.
