Help with permissions and sophie

I am trying to understand permissions as they relate to the check_dir.pl
script in sample_apps/perl_sock

I want to be able to launch the check_dir.pl script as root, and have it
scan files owned by any user.  The script works fine for files that are
owned by root, but returns a "Error: File could not be accessed" message for
files owned by a different user.

If I su to a user other than root (and other than the user defined in
sophie.cfg), the script can't connect to the socket.

I currently have the socket and sophie.pid in a directory owned by the user
defined in sophie.cfg.

Is my configuration correct?  How can I have sophie scan for users other
than root and the sophie user?
