Although I'm still using 3.89 on my production server, I've given it a
try on a spare Linux box, compiled Sophie 1.44 with Sophos 3.90, and
it worked flawlessly:

> ./sophie
Initializing    : Grp* options (engine >= 2.14)
Initializing : Sophos engine version 2.28
Initializing : Sophos IDE version 3.90 (detects 99862 viruses)
Socket path : /var/amavis/sophie.sock
Port : 4009
Temporary dir : /tmp
Timeout : 300 seconds
Running as user : nobody
Socket group : nobody
Max processes : 20
PID file : /var/amavis/sophie.pid
Sophie version : 1.44

(yes I know, run as "nobody" is a poor choice, that was just for a
quick test!)

So it seems that 3.90 hasn't broken Sophie 1.44 on a general basis.
There could be someting happening on FreeBSD.
My only FreeBSD box here is an old DEC Alphastation, so I can't try.

If you can do some C programming, I'd look into sophie_init.c and try
to add code that digs out an error code from the API and display it.
Shouldn't be that difficult, but I don't have time for this now.

Good luck,
_Alain_
