Err... looking at the code, sophie_init.c *already* displays the 
status returned by the API! No need to tweak source code.
So the exact, complete error message should be like:

ERROR: Failed to initialize SAVI [<some value>]

I guess that knowing <some value> would be a good start! Please
copy/paste the complete message.
