As some have already mentioned the concept of "proactive vs reactive," what about solutions like PivX PreEmpt, McAfee Entercept, or Cisco Security Agent? I know they have their strengths and weaknesses but at some point, the cost of hoping that your anti-virus/worm/spyware covers all of the known nasties may be too great compared to the cost of solutions that may be a pain to manage but block a lot of junk. Practically speaking, anyone have good/bad experiences with HIPS products vs. malware specifically as opposed to other threats (which would be clearly off-topic)?
