RE: Microsoft AntiSpyware falling further behind

I am very sorry, but I disagree with " but in all fairness no matter which
product you go with, their all signature based, consequently some spyware
will slip through" statement. 

Spyware scanning is nothing like virus scanning other than the using of
signatures to figure out what is and isn't spyware. 

The crux of the problem is plain and simple, Lawyers. No company, not even
Microsoft, is willing to label something as spyware and then be tied up in
court with lots of $$$ being paid defending their opinion. 

Microsoft itself has proved it will only label things as spyware until they
pickup a spyware package themselves and then they will too ignore it as
spyware. See Gator as a prime example. 


Until there is some why to define and come to grips with things everyone IS
department knows as spyware, these products will do little for us other than
point out the obvious. That is why you have to use different products from
different countries. Even then, there are plenty of spyware products out
there that it comes down to sheer tenacity to get rid of, even though it is
quite obvious that it is nothing more than a pox on the computer. 

I am not saying this is right, and at this point, I don't even know how to
define it or what to do about it in the future, but there it is. If it
quacks, walks and looks like spyware, it most likely is. 

It is time to get the lawyers out of software definitions and get Microsoft
(who should be helping us protect the os system and the registry at the very
least) to fix it and some type of international protection for those
companies making anti-spyware to make something that works. 

Now, I wouldn't mind a few visits from an enforcer to some of these spyware
writers' offices to break a few legs, but that is just me after spending
countless hours cleaning up after their messes.
