Full key exchange doesn't happen every time. It only happens when there is
no already established shared key between client and server. So the first
connection will take a large hit, but then later connection are not quite so
expensive. The "keylifetime" parameter controls how long shared keys last
before full key exchange happens again.

Having said that, there will always be some overhead in tunnel setup --
there has to be some protocol exchange to do this!

That's correct.

Several people have suggested that Zebedee should multiplex tunnelled
connections between client and server over a single TCP connection. That
would lower (but not entirely elminate) the tunnel setup cost. However, this
would require a complete rework of the protocol.

Yes, I'm still here -- and I'd like to apologies to anyone who has been
waiting for a response from me. I've had no time at all to work on Zebedee
recently. I haven't entirely abandoned Zebedee, but I have been neglecting
it.

I'd really like to at least get release 2.6 (that's 2.5.2 declared "stable")
finally out of the door -- the main barrier is finding the time to get the
documentation up to date. Are there any vounteers out there? After that ...
who knows?
