I would add stunnel to the list of comparable tools.

Zebedee, OpenSSL, and stunnel are all similar tools with various uses. All are worthy for your networking tool box. :)

I have been using zebedee 2.4.x (latest stable) for a very long time with no problems.

I only wish that zebedee could handle per-port compression level and UDP/TCP protocol type configurations rather than making it
necessary to run a different instance of zebedee for each combination of those parameters...

For example, FTP/HTTP connections can benefit from both zebedee compression and encryption, but VNC session have their own
compression capabilities and would benefit only from the encryption provided by zebedee.

I also wonder about Neil... :)
