There are two quite good text area editors that I'd recommend if you're looking for one.

http://www.fckeditor.net/

There really isn't a reason to have something that isn't cross platform compatible.  Better yet, set up the editor as a plug in so that people can use the one that they like.

We already have plugins for those editors - see spartacus.s9y.org for
plugins that use TinyMCE or FCKEditor.
