MySql not found during installation

Serendipity installation
We detected some errors while running some diagnostics on your entered
information:
- No mySQL extension found. Please check your webserver installation or
contact your systems administrator regarding this problem.
This box has phpmysqladmin successfully installed which, of course, uses
mysql. Why can serendipity not find it?
