This is my setup right now and it is hardly 10 times what a desktop system
would cost.

Dell Latitude
P4 2.0GHz
1GB RAM
40GB HD (5400RPM)

My employer picked it up for about $2100 10 months ago.  Should be around
$1600 - $1800 by now.  For people that are willing to work on "work" at
home, this is the perfect opportunity for an employer to cash-in on some
"free" hours from their employees!

You can convince them Buck, I know it is in ya! :-)
