Using revision levels instead of new component numbers

We are looking for a solution to avoid the ever growing practice of 
assigning new component numbers every time the component changes. (one 
school of thought here on interpreting the form, fit, function rule)

Has anyone had success in using the revision level feature in XA?  We have 
done some testing on this and it seems to work well- we created revisions 
with different costs and effective dates and tried them out in bills of 
material. Some are hesitant about the fact that we cannot track inventory 
by revision level.

We are at release 7.06
