Yes, I tested this with a 2-line python script, AIX 4.3.1 doesn't seem to
have a problem with this notation. However if you try to call something not
in the PATH with /usr/bin/env you get an error message exactly like the one
I'm seeing, so it looks like things you say later in this message will
work...

I was assuming that the environment I invoked try-ark from would be
inherited, which doesn't seem to be the case. Some things (python for one)
are in non-standard locations, because I want the current installations to
be throw-away installs only used to bootstrap ark.

That's an excellent idea. This showed that the PATH was:
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/local1/tmp/
try-ark/our/bin
which was missing /local1/tmp/bootstrap/bin , which is the location of my
python binary.

I edited that to include /local1/tmp/bootstrap/bin, and try-ark seems to be
working now (it's in the middle of building packages as I'm writing this).
For the most part I think this is my fault for not reading over ALL.xml,
but IMHO it wouldn't hurt to change this item in
http://ark.sourceforge.net/try-ark1.html:
3. An XML file for proto-host `ALL'. The one we supplied in
sample1/host/ALL.xml should do nicely.
To something like this:
3. An XML file for proto-host `ALL'. The one we supplied in
sample1/host/ALL.xml should do nicely. Be sure to read this file and change
ARK-BUILDING-PATH if you have programs in nonstandard locations. Ark will
do builds using ARK-BUILDING-PATH, not by inheriting the PATH of the
calling environment.
Thanks,
