| hi all,

Hello,

|
| I tried to create a plugin for dar in Midnight commander (mc), without
| success.
| Because I have some big backups running dar through sarab automatically
| that I would like to browse in case a user comes to me saying:
|
| "I lost these important files here, I don't know exactly their names,
| nor the exact path. But if you show me your backup, I'll find them
| quickly."
|
| My question is: Is it teoretically possible to browse dar-slices?

Browsing a single slice is not possible but browsing a given archive
(split or not in several slices) is (of course) possible, through the
API and in different manners (sequential reading or dynamic tree
exploration). I have recently updated the api_tutorial.html file about
that last point, you can obtain a copy of it from CVS if you wish:

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/dar/dar/doc/api_tutorial.html?rev=1.15&view=log

| Maybe
| kdar (which I couldn't compile yet) is fine for this task?

I think kdar is a fine tool if you just want to browse a given archive,
command-line -l option in conjunction of -X -I options masks can also
save you a lot of time (look also at the -as option). Last, dar_manager
is not bad when you have a large set of archive to browse for a given
restricted set of files.

|
| Maybe a plugin for Far (windows) or Volkov Commander (DOS+windows) would
| be easier to create?

I can't tell you, I don't know theses softwares, sorry. Be assured
however that I will help you as much as I can concerning dar and libdar
usage.

| Any sugestions or help are welcome,
|

Cheers,
Denis.
