That sounds promising. I guess it will only require minor code changes,
and will result in getting the most speed gain.

In the mean time I have discovered the program 'buffer'. It is used to
get a steady stream for tape drives. I'll try to pipe the output of dar
through it and see if it give a speed increase in my situation. I guess
to make some similar, but builtin to dar would also not be a larger code
change. But I think it would be larger than the pigz change.
