About tape, the current code in "fixed API" phase for next to come major release 2.4.0 has support for tapes. Dar can read a archive in sequence (like tar does), as well as the original and quicker way using random access to file. Of course it can also output archive to pipe (that's to say to tape also). Yes, this has been a important work in dar.
